Today, we took a little sojourn well beyond the borders of the Mile High City, up to historic Central City. Sister city to Blackhawk, CO, Central City is historic casino gambling territory. Amid the 100+ year-old buildings, casinos, and storefronts, you might not expect to find craft beer waiting for consumption. But MHB was lucky enough to stumble across Dostal Alley, a humble brewpub in the heart of Central City’s casino district. Read on past the break for a closer look at Dostal Alley.

Despite having such humble surroundings, Dostal Alley felt like a refreshing diamond-in-the-rough in Central City. Once a burgeoning gambling town, Central City is nowadays somewhat dwarfed by the giant luxury casinos in neighboring Blackhawk. But that’s not to say that Central City should be overlooked. The sense of history in the town is awesome, and unassuming spots like Dostal Alley are great gems in the town.

Welcome to Dostal Alley

Mountain Pies for Mountain Appetites

Before we get to the beer, we have to talk about Dostal Alley’s pizza. Many people around Colorado are familiar with the concept of “Mountain Pizza,” big pies surrounded by a delicious, thick braided crust. Dostal Alley makes a mean mountain pizza pie, with a variety of toppings, and the perfect amount of grease to make you glad you ordered. The next time you’re in Blackhawk or just looking for a trip somewhere out of the ordinary, stop for pizza at Dostal Alley.

Beer me!

I must say, for being so secluded and understated, the beer at Dostal Alley was surprisingly good. We tried the house stout, english pub ale, and pale ale while enjoying a mighty pizza, and enjoyed every sip. The stout was more complex than expected, but still drank as easily as a Guinness. The pub ale was possibly the best we tasted, and is worth ordering should you make a pilgrimage.

All in all, Dostal Alley is a great surprise in the mountains near Blackhawk. You may not have your mind blown by the decor, but you will get one delicious pizza and some seriously tasty beer.

Check out Dostal Alley online, and stop in for a brew and a slice.
